Laboratory and Medicines Control Section

The Laboratory and Medicines Control Section (LMCS) was officially formed in 1980 at the Madrid FIP Congress following having been a committee for more than 60 years. The mission of the section is to undertake and coordinate the research and development of methods, to establish principles for assuring the quality of pharmaceutical and medical products both nationally and internationally and to exchange information and opinions upon technical and professional issues pertaining to medicines control and quality assurance. In order to achieve its mission the section may undertake the following activities:

  • Develop recommendations and guidelines in the field of quality of medicines.
  • Improve quality standards of medicines control laboratories by supporting the development and accreditation of quality systems and by organizing proficiency testing.
  • Initiate collaborative studies on the quality of medicines.
  • Act as an information centre in the field of quality of medicines.
  • Organize local section meetings.
  • Organize specialized technical, professional and scientific conferences with the FIP Board of Pharmaceutical Practice and the FIP Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences as well as with other sections and organizations outside FIP.
  • Develop activities for special working groups independently or in collaboration with other FIP sections.

LMCS has today just under 100 active members representing 24 countries. This broad representation is of great importance for inputs on different questions and issues dealt with at symposia, workshops and discussion groups organized by the Section.

LMCS holds both scientific and professional meetings regularly within the FIP annual congresses. In addition to this the Section also arranges private Spring Meetings on an annual basis. These meetings are held at convenient national laboratories in Europe and are mainly focused on technical discussions and professional contacts. At both meetings a session is included for members papers and posters on questions concerning medicines control in a broad sense.
